Do you find it difficult to say no? Are your personal boundaries often unclear or unmet? Do you sometimes feel unheard or struggle to express your needs and opinions confidently?
These challenges are common — and learning how to navigate them through assertive communication and boundary setting can support healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self.
Why Assertive Communication Matters

Assertive communication is a style of expressing your thoughts, needs, and feelings in a clear, respectful, and confident manner. It involves advocating for yourself while also acknowledging the rights and perspectives of others
Assertiveness can support healthy boundaries, improve interpersonal relationships, and reduce
misunderstandings. It may also assist individuals in managing stress and maintaining a clearer sense of self in personal and professional situations.
Psychologists can work with individuals to identify communication patterns, explore the impact of these patterns on relationships, and develop new skills using evidence-based techniques. This may include role- playing scenarios, goal-setting, or learning to respond rather than react in challenging situations.
Assertiveness training may include exploring personal boundaries, recognising passive or aggressive
communication habits, and learning strategies for expressing needs respectfully. Techniques are tailored to the individual’s goals and comfort level.
You can book directly with a psychologist for support with communication and boundary-setting. However, if you'd like to access Medicare rebates, a referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP is required.
