Communication Skills

Building Effective Communication and Assertiveness Skills

Do you find it difficult to say no? Are your personal boundaries often unclear or unmet? Do you sometimes feel unheard or struggle to express your needs and opinions confidently?

These challenges are common — and learning how to navigate them through assertive communication and boundary setting can support healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self.

Why Assertive Communication Matters

Assertive communication is not about getting your own way. Instead, it's about expressing yourself clearly, respectfully, and confidently — while also considering the needs and perspectives of others.

Learning assertiveness skills can help:

  • Clarify your needs in personal or professional relationships
  • Minimise miscommunication or assumptions
  • Reduce feelings of being overlooked or disrespected
  • Support a greater sense of autonomy over your time, space, and wellbeing

Supportive, Evidence-Based Skill Development

At Mind Mode Psychology & Wellness, our team of psychologists and practitioners in Wollongong and Campbelltown provides guidance in developing effective communication techniques using evidence-based

approaches such as Motivational Interviewing and other therapeutic models. These approaches aim to support clients in building self-awareness and improving interpersonal effectiveness.

You’ll find a respectful and inclusive space where you can explore communication styles, practise setting boundaries, and build skills to enhance your personal and professional relationships.

Take the First Step

Improving communication begins with small, intentional steps — even reaching out can be a meaningful act of assertiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at admin@mindmode.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Assertive communication is a style of expressing your thoughts, needs, and feelings in a clear, respectful, and confident manner. It involves advocating for yourself while also acknowledging the rights and perspectives of others

Assertiveness can support healthy boundaries, improve interpersonal relationships, and reduce

misunderstandings. It may also assist individuals in managing stress and maintaining a clearer sense of self in personal and professional situations.

Psychologists can work with individuals to identify communication patterns, explore the impact of these patterns on relationships, and develop new skills using evidence-based techniques. This may include role- playing scenarios, goal-setting, or learning to respond rather than react in challenging situations.

Assertiveness training may include exploring personal boundaries, recognising passive or aggressive

communication habits, and learning strategies for expressing needs respectfully. Techniques are tailored to the individual’s goals and comfort level.

You can book directly with a psychologist for support with communication and boundary-setting. However, if you'd like to access Medicare rebates, a referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP is required.
