Adjustment Disorder

Understanding Adjustment Disorder

A Supportive Path to Healing and Coping

Adjustment disorder is a recognised mental health condition characterised by emotional or behavioural responses to identifiable life stressors. These responses may be more intense or prolonged than expected and can interfere with daily functioning.

At Mind Mode Psychology & Wellness, we understand that life transitions — even those that are expected or positive — can feel overwhelming. Our team of registered psychologists and mental health professionals offers evidence-based support to help you manage and adapt to these challenges.

When Coping Feels Too Hard

Change is a natural part of life, but not all change is easy. Whether you're facing job loss, relationship changes, relocation, or loss, it’s normal to feel distressed. Sometimes, our usual ways of coping no longer feel effective — like trying to use an umbrella in a storm that’s just too strong.

If you’re finding it hard to function at work, maintain relationships, or enjoy the things you used to, you may be experiencing adjustment disorder.

Common Symptoms of Adjustment Disorder

  • Adjustment disorder presents differently for everyone. You may experience:
  • Persistent sadness or low mood
  • Increased anxiety, worry, or tension
  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite
  • Crying frequently or feeling emotionally overwhelmed
  • Withdrawal from social or professional life
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches

It’s important to note: these symptoms are not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign that additional support may be helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at admin@mindmode.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Adjustment disorder is a stress-related condition that occurs when a person has difficulty coping with or adjusting to a significant life change or stressful event. It may cause emotional and physical symptoms that interfere with daily life.

Common triggers include relationship breakdowns, job loss, financial issues, illness, or relocation. Even positive changes like becoming a parent or starting a new job can lead to adjustment difficulties.

Adjustment disorder is typically managed with short-term psychological interventions. Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and stress management strategies are commonly used by psychologists to support clients experiencing difficulty adjusting to life changes.

Symptoms typically begin within three months of a stressful event and may last up to six months. However, with appropriate support, many people experience relief sooner.

Yes. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for psychological sessions. Speak with your GP or contact our clinic for more details.

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist privately, but a referral from your GP with a Mental Health Treatment Plan is required to access Medicare rebates.
